A Mexican standoff refers to a confrontation in which there is no possible route to victory for any party, but simultaneously there is no way for any party to extricate themselves from the situation without immense suffering, and possibly death.
A Jersey Standoff is a Mexican standoff which ends with the strategic tension of the situation being shattered by a series of highly improbable and often humorous events happening to one of the parties, most typically involving ladders, pianos, forklifts, or electricity.
