The Back Office (colloquially known as the Back Orifice) is the division of Golly tasked with the proper care and feeding of the clomputational machines.

History

The Back Office is the oldest office in Golly.

The original idea for Golly was born in the Back Office, as was the idea to awaken Golly Commissioner Rubrix Helicopter from cryogenic slumber.

Bureaucratic Divisions

The Back Office/Orifice is responsible for all things technical in Golly, including keeping computational machines healthy and well-fed, designing maps, and experimenting with cellular automata.

The most notable divisions include:

  • E Division - engineering, technical support for Golly operations
  • M Division - maps, grids, and map-related field research
  • X Division - experimental cellular automata; started as a highly secretive research project, but is now an open secret
  • G Division - git traffic control, handles code logistics
  • R Division - records and history; maintains the Golly library and Golly research archives

Character

Most of the Back Office is dedicated to managing the notoriously temperamental and very messy computational machines. They have voracious appetites but can get sick easily, and must be carefully monitored for health and stability. The nickname Back Orifice was originally inspired by the tremendous mess the computational machines make, which gets everywhere and requires specialized cleaning tools and highly-trained specialists to safely remove.

Most Back Office workers are very similar to the computational machines they take care of - they can be temperamental and messy, but if harnessed correctly, can accomplish extraordinary feats.

Compensation

Employees in the Back Office receive the highest compensation of all Golly employees. They also operate the database that stores salaries for each employee.
