After the initial exuberance of Hellmouth II/Season 1, the San Francisco Boat Shoes again performed brilliantly in Hellmouth II/Season 4, where they earned the #1 seed. They were seemingly on top of the world, and had yet to experience any ill effects from their Probability Loan. But at the first sign of difficulty, the Boat Shoes had a meltdown, and were knocked out in a stunning first-round exit at the hands of the lower-seeded Jersey OSHA Violations .

The unexpected loss to the OSHA Violations was compounded in Hellmouth II/Season 5, when the Boat Shoes experienced a full-on regular-season meltdown. It was obvious by that point that the Boat Shoes were beginning to pay the price for their Hellmouth II/Season 1 success.
