Twice more, the San Francisco Boat Shoes clawed their way to the Hellmouth II Cup final, and twice more, the universe extracted a pound of flesh for payment. The two Hellmouth II Cup finals that the Boat Shoes lost would come to overshadow their dream Hellmouth II/Season 1 season, and would become the Hellmouth II Cup Boat Shoes that everyone remembered: a team whose successes only seemed to feed their failures.

In Hellmouth II/Season 9, the Boat Shoes finally survived the gauntlet of the postseason and made it to the Hellmouth II Cup series, facing off against their old nemesis, the Long Beach Flightless Birds . But they couldn't scrape together more than a single win, and fell 1-4 to the Birds. The loss suggested that the Boat Shoes were haunted by the ghosts of their past, and were unable to move on from their Hellmouth Cup glory days.

Just 8 seasons later, the Boat Shoes again made it to the Hellmouth II Cup series, this time facing off against a new power, the Tucson Butchers . They lost the series to the Butchers, 2-4, in a messy and bloody affair. The loss suggested that despite having moved on from their Hellmouth Cup glory days, the Boat Shoes struggled with the new tricks needed to defeat teams they'd never faced before.
