Analysis Notebook Problem
Not sure what I'm doing. I started on some notebooks, but then, I'm writing a bunch of janky one-off functions. It feels completely wrong.
Would be better if we incorporated code we already wrote for wiki pages into classes or functions or modules or something.
Also, I've tread this same pattern before, not knowing where to start, always being shunted to the same teams all the time, SFBS.
Lore Building
Trying to unblock.
...
Elements of rivalry lore:
- built into the cultures or geographies of cities
- built into the histories of the teams (not just institutions or cities, but owners, managers, coaches, individual players)
...
What elements haven't we touched?
- individual character of cities... almost nothing is specific to the cities
- no background for team history - formation - nothing
- no details about stadium or venue
- no locked ourselves into home/away
- no picking a way Hellmouth connects to everything
- bodies of water?
...
Personas:
- personas?
- (a) we don't want to have 12,000 players per team
- (b) we don't want to have managers/owners, we already have the faceless bureaucracy.
- (c) rather than owners, we can do (1) players and (2) long-winded backronym bureaucratic division names
How to use notebooks
Single Team Single Season Schedule
Extract and print out a line-by-line list of games - opponent, win/loss, score - for a given season.
49 games: 24 home/away combo pairs for the Hellmouth Cup.
24 combo pairs = 24 hours, plus one midnight tiebreaker.
Also nice b/c 50/50 split of home/away games, gives us another stat to look at.
Avoiding the thousand bowls of oatmeal: we're interested in interesting teams... use single-season and all-time records to guide what teams we look at and when.
- what did their schedule look like? how would fans have reacted?
- this provides context, season to season, and for a single season, for building narratives
- even two or three seasons of awfulness can have a back story.
Broad strokes:
- re-work the Hellmouth Cup page, revisit rules, etc.
- see User:Ch4zm/November_2022/Lore_Fragments
Single events get lore fragments:
- example: User:Ch4zm/December_2021/Lore_Fragments
- new lore: User:Ch4zm/November_2022/Lore_Fragments
Single Rivalry Single or Multiple Seasons
Similar to above, provide a way to print a line-by-line summary of games between two rivals in a given season...
Okay, this is LOTS of data, VERY microscopic view...
Want more tweaks, like showing each team's W-L record on the schedule too...
This is the right view if we have one or a few interesting seasons, identified via Records
Or a rivalry identified by interesting season/stats, see below...
Summary of Record vs Opponents
Take one step back, and print W-L summaries against each component, each season, plus all time
This sounds like a table that goes on a wiki page, but that's also a lot of info, and this will be an explosion. Let's just try it out in a notebook first.
Combinatorics:
- Original teams, regular season: 16 teams, 2 leagues of 8 teams each. 8 choose 2 = 28, so we have 2 x 28 = 56 potential rivalries.
- Expansion teams, regular season: 20 teams, 2 leagues of 10 teams each. 10 choose 2 = 45, so we have 2 x 45 = 90 potential rivalries.
- Original teams, Hellmouth Cup: 64 potential matchups in the final Cup
- Expansion teams, Hellmouth Cup: 100 potential matchups in the final Cup
Might even be useful to just make a list, and see them written out.
Random Ideas
Golly League
Salt Lake Turbulence:
- Hellmouth Cup: season 16 through season 24, SLC turbulence are childless and free
- Toroidal Cup: seemingly overnight, they have an entire army of little leaguers
little league team:
- the Little Eddies
- team parents
- little league team always following the big league team around
"rivalry" (anti-rivalry) with the osha violations (uncle osha):
- when they play the jersey osha violations they have to get a sitter so the kids don't have to go to jersey
