The Cali Crown is one of the most storied and intense rivalries in all of Golly. It is between the Northern California big city primadonnas, the San Francisco Boat Shoes, and their meek, obeisant neighbors at the state capital, the Sacramento Boot Lickers.

History
Juice
Sometime prior to Season 1 of the Hellmouth Cup, a sea iguana named Juice became, for various complicated reasons, the subject of a legal dispute between the Sacramento Zoo and the San Francisco Zoo. The legal dispute captured the imagination of the broader public, and the story of Juice was told and retold down through the ages.
An unknown person commissioned an 8-foot-by-5-foot oil painting of Juice, but Juice in an alternate universe, where reptiles become superintelligent and take over the planet and Juice is the emperor of all the reptiles. The painting was an instant success and became wildly popular overnight, so much so that it supplanted Juice as the center of everyone's attention, and the painting of Juice came to be called Juice.
When Golly teams based in Sacramento and San Francisco were announced, both teams tried to select Juice as their celebrity mascot. The Commissioner of Golly, anxious to avoid a legal battle blowing up the brand-new splort of Golly before it had a chance to take off, declared Juice off-limits for both teams, and created the Cali Crown to decide who would get to hang on to Juice (the oil painting, not the sea iguana).

Season 3 Fixing Scandal

During Season 3 the Sacramento Boot Lickers
had the humiliation of having to wear the Cali Crown while watching their rivals the San Francisco Boat Shoes
win the Hellmouth Cup against the 
Elko Astronauts
. However, the newly-crowned champion Boat Shoes were quickly ensnared in scandal.
As the circumstances around the Boat Shoes' victory came into question, the Boot Lickers remained largely silent on the matter in public. However, several news outlets reported on back channels opened by the Boot Lickers to help direct legal firepower and financial backing for the lawsuit that the entire Golly league filed against the Boat Shoes.
When the Boat Shoes called out the Boot Lickers to come clean on the matter of financial backing for lawsuits against the Boat Shoes, the Boot Lickers responded by calling out the Boat Shoes to return their tainted Hellmouth Cup. The matter remained unsettled.
Season 4 Boot Lickers Bankruptcy

Following the contentious events of Season 3, the Boot Lickers went on to win their division in Season 4 with a late-series run for the playoffs, and went all the way, winning the championship against the Long Beach Flightless Birds.
However, the Boot Lickers went bankrupt following the championship victory, in a rapid descent that left the Boat Shoes feeling almost sympathetic. Their sympathy evaporated after losing the Cali Crown to the Boot Lickers two more years in a row.
