The Berkeley Brutalists are a Golly team from Berkeley, California. They are a part of the Peninsula Expansion League, introduced for the Pseudo Cup. The Berkeley Brutalists are a commune of theorists with a wide range of interests. They generally shun technology (to the extent that it does not interfere with their academic research), and prefer nature, open spaces, and ancient heavenly connections over the harsh hum of the machinery of the starry dynamo.

The Brutalists have a quiet, intense stare that many people find unsettling. They live a stoic life, and the entire team shares a small, bare apartment on Telegraph Avenue.

Team Character

The Berkeley Brutalists are a commune of theorists who have a wide-ranging field of academic interests that include architecture, combinatorical algorithms, post-monentary economics, theoretical astrophysics, quantum logic, queer literature, neutron irradiation, post-colonialist theory, topoology of the brain, fluid dynamics, the history of science, rational economics, and underground rivers. In their free time, they enjoy drawing on the walls with crayons.

The Brutalists are fierce proponents of parks and other public spaces, and make active efforts to incorporate parks into their daily routine. They often spend afternoons perched on a park bench, staring quietly and intensely into the distance. Often, while the Brutalists are in this rapt state, people will sit down on the park bench next to them, and carry on entire conversations, while the Brutalists stare intently off into the distance. The Brutalists have made many lifelong friends (and a few enemies) this way, many of whom they sadly do not remember because they were too busy staring quietly and intensely into the distance.

In Dragon/Season 17 the Sand City Sidewinders swept the Berkeley Brutalists 4-0 in the Season 17 Dragon Cup Series in the Squeaky Sweep. It was only the second sweep that had ever occurred in the Dragon Cup. It happened one season after the first sweep (see the Season 16 Dragon Cup Series).

The sweep earned the nickname The Squeaky Sweep because the Sand City Sidewinders won the clinching Game 4 by one single point: the final score was 5,850 - 5,849 ( 23792408-4863-4c88-9033-2a338076187f). When the loss occurred, and the game clock ticked its final tick, the grid was immediately rushed by Sidewinders fans, making it impossible for the Brutalists to challenge the ruling of the Grid Umpires - and leading to a slew of conspiracy theories that are widely and regularly discussed among the Brutalist collective. Brutalists fans have developed an elaborate oral tradition and a network of historians to preserve memories of the most culturally significant conspiracy theories surrounding the Squeaky Sweep.

The Brutalists are convinced that they can simply have the final call of the game declared incorrect after the fact by a Grid Umpire, which would lead to the outcome of the game getting tossed, which would force the entire series outcome to be invalidated, which would leave the final champion undetermined, which would make that postseason a violation of the rules, which would render it null, void, and invalid. (Despite the Dragon Cup having concluded, the Brutalists are still pursuing legal options.)

The Brutalists did manage to get revenge on the Sidewinders; the Sand City Sidewinders had humiliated the Berkeley Brutalists with a sweep in a Cup series, but fans generally viewed the Brutalists more favorably. Seizing on this, the Brutalists began a major media blitz, with ads featuring the Sidewinders nickname, "The One Point Wonder" - diminishing their victory and tarnishing their reputation. The ads included celebrities, actors, and puppies, and was a grand success and resulted in the Sidewinders' One Point Wonder nickname sticking permanently.

The Squeaky Sweep is considered the most significant single-season defeat since the stunning upset of the Oakland Bees in the final generations of Game 7 of the Season 1 Pseudo Cup Series.
