Season 4/Sacramento Boot Lickers Bankruptcy
The Sacramento Boot Lickers Bankruptcy was an incident that occurred after the Season 4 Hellmouth Cup championship game, which the
Sacramento Boot Lickers
won against the
Long Beach Flightless Birds
.
Following the Hellmouth Cup championship victory by the
Sacramento Boot Lickers
, the Boot Lickers fan base poured into the streets of downtown Sacramento to celebrate the victory. In the midst of the festivities, which drew huge crowds, several vehicles were immolated by fans attempting to channel the Spirit of the Primal Fire (the Major Arcana of the Boot Lickers' Cali Crown rivalry with the
San Francisco Boat Shoes
. A radio tower was also toppled, which damaged buildings for many blocks.
Following the destruction, the Sacramento Boot Lickers interrupted their own celebrations to rush downtown and find a way to take the blame for the destruction and apologize to anyone they could find on behalf of their fan base. Players left notes taking responsibility for all damages on vehicles parked in downtown Sacramento, and offered to pay building owners for property repairs caused by the radio tower.
In the aftermath, the Sacramento Boot Lickers organization was rendered bankrupt by the resulting litigation and settlements, leading the team to hit rock bottom and bedeclared insolvent in bankruptcy court exactly 1 week after attaining their dream of winning the Hellmouth Cup against the team that had beaten their rivals, the \Boat Shoes.
Previous Playoffs Appearances
In their only previous postseason appearance, in Season 1, the
San Francisco Boat Shoes
lost in the Division Series to their Cali Crown rivals the
San Francisco Boat Shoes
. With the Boot Lickers fan base hungry for a postseason run, and the Boat Shoes out of contention, Season 4 set the stage for the Boot Lickers.
During Season 3, Sacramento Boot Lickers fans watched with dismay as their bitter rivals skated through the playoffs and claimed victory in a questionable Hellmouth Cup victory that was later tainted by scandal and litigation.
During Season 4, the Boot Lickers maintained an unimpressive record. Then, on Day 29, the Boot Lickers turned on the gas, racking up enough wins to overtake the
Atlanta Glitter Sharks
and
Orlando Business Majors
for the Hot Water division title. Sacramento's come-from-behind win fired up the fan base and gathered interest in the team, as more Sacramentonians began to tune in for the playoffs.
Season 4 Playoffs and Championship Game
The Boot Lickers finished the season in first place, and beat their Hot Water division mates the
Atlanta Glitter Sharks
in the Division Series round, then powered through the
Detroit Grape Chews
to take the Hot League pennant.
The Boot Lickers faced the
Long Beach Flightless Birds
in the final championship game - the same team that had beaten the
San Francisco Boat Shoes
to win the first ever Hellmouth Cup. The Boot Lickers were eager for a championship win, but the prospect of beating the team that had beaten their bitter rivals added chocolate chips of schadenfreude to an already delicious championship cake.
The Sacramento fan base was ravenous for a championship and for bragging rights against the
San Francisco Boat Shoes
.
Post-Championship Game and Destruction of Property
Following their Season 4 Hellmouth Cup championship victory, the
Sacramento Boot Lickers
fan base celebrated in downtown Sacramento. During the celebration, several vehicles caught fire and were immolated. The scene that unfolded was an attempt by Boot Lickers fans to channel the Spirit of the Primal Fire and set the stage for the Final Judgement, which, sadly for Boot Lickers fans, did not occur.
In addition to vehicles being immolated, a single small group of individuals managed to topple a radio tower, which, being quite tall, caused extensive property damage to houses and buildings for several blocks.
The Morning After and Litigation
Word of the destruction reached the Boot Lickers' clubhouse shortly thereafter. Distressed at the thought of inconveniencing fellow Sacramentans, all 120,000 members of the Sacramento Boot Lickers piled onto the team bus and drove to downtown Sacramento, where they scoured the streets looking for damaged or burned vehicles and leaving business cards with contact information and apologies for causing the damage, apologies which were compact enough to fit on a business card but were long enough to be legally binding in a court of law.
The resulting flurry of legal suits against the team that followed buried the Sacramento Boot Lickers organization in legal costs, and the settlements that the team was required to award to residents of Sacramento settled the fate of the team: their finances were completely wiped out and the team had to declare bankruptcy one week after winning the Hellmouth Cup champion title.
